QUALIFICATIONS
- Be available and willing to undertake an extensive training
program in horticultural sciences. The brochure for the 2006 class
can be viewed here.
- Earn a final score of at least 80% on the final exam
administered following the classwork
- Have dedication and willingness to provide a minimum of fifty
(50) hours of volunteer service within one (1) year from the end
of the training period.
FEES
- To cover the cost of training manuals and supplies, a fee will
be charged.
- The fee in 2006 was $200 per person. $50.00 is refunded to each
Master Gardener who completes the training and completes a minimum
of 50 hours of volunteer service in the first year.
TO APPLY
- Call, write or email our office and ask that your name be placed
on the Master Gardener list for the next class.
- You will be sent an application packet in mid summer.
ORIENTATION DATE
- Orientation/screenings will be held in late August/early September
TRAINING
- The Master Gardener Programs will offer a minimum of thirty
(30) hours of training.
- Core classes include: Plant Science, Soil Science, Plant
Propagation, Entomology, Plant Pathology, Integrated Pest
Management, Pesticide Safety and Communication Skills
- Additional classes may include: Turfgrass, Pruning,
Vegetables, Trees, Small Fruit, Indoor Plants, Herbaceous
Ornamentals (flowers) and Woody Ornamentals (shrubs)
EXPECTED COMMITMENT
- Attend required training sessons.
- Perform fifty (50) volunteer hours for Penn State Cooperative
Extension.
- Maintain an activity log and submit to the county extension
office on a quarterly basis.
- Attend meetings to update information, discuss gardening
problems and coordinate Master Gardener activities. Washington
County Master Gardeners generally meet 6 times a year (on an
as-needed basis).
- Participate in Cooperative Extension activites as needs arise.
- Provide own transportation
